THE NEW MEXICO ELKS ASSOCIATION, Established in 1928 has a good record of sponsoring worthwhile charitable, educational and benevolent programs in the State having expended several hundred thousand dollars for these purposes.
Diversification to meet the need of the times is indicated by some of the following Elks projects.
CEREBRAL PALSY – Over 1,000 children involved with this multiple handicap in every part of the state have been helped to some degree.
YOUTH SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS – In cooperation with the Elks National Foundation, deserving graduate students are selected annually for some assistance in the continuation of their education in higher learning.
VETERANS PROGRAMS – A continuous program of activities and materials is carried on at the Veterans Hospital in New Mexico. Leather for craftwork, playing cards, cameras, paper-bound books, bingo games and shows, are furnished to make the Veteran’s stay in the hospital as pleasant as possible and to aid in the recovery and rehabilitation process.
TEACHERS WORKSHOPS – SUMMER COURSES - Hundreds of teachers have participated in Elks sponsored courses to receive special training and a better understanding of the educational problems of handicapped children.
EVALUATION CLINICS – Four New Mexico universities have conducted Speech, Hearing and Psychometric Testing clinics sponsored by the Elks so the best potential of each child could be determined to assist with training and treatment programs. These have also provided with the handicapped.
THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ANY CHARGE by the Elks to any family for services.
